In Yiran Zhao‘s piece SHH I a solo performer plays upon a single audience member’s head, creating a performance only experienced by them. Closing their eyes and wearing earplugs to lessen the outside environment, attention is focused toward the calming rhythms stroked.
I performed this piece alongside other percussionists in the summer of 2018 at the Darmstädter Ferienkurse and again in a showcase of post-graduate students at The University of Huddersfield in March 2019.
Here is a review of the Darmstadt performance in the German publication Echo.
